Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
All employers, self employed, landlords are required ‘as maybe necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent so far as is reasonably practicable, such danger’ or injury to their employees, customers, tenants, general public from electrical equipment in or on their premises.

Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
‘Every employer shall ensure that work equipment is so constructed or adapted as to be suitable for the purpose for which it is used or provided.’

‘Where significant risk to the operator from the installation or use of work equipment has been identified, a suitable inspection should be carried out.’

Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999
‘Every employer shall make a suitable and sufficient assessment of risks to health & safety of his employees to which they are exposed whilst they are at work, and the risks to health & safety of persons not in his employment arising out of or in connection with the conduct by him of his undertaking.’

All of the above regulations are consistent with
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
This Act is all-embracing requiring all those concerned with an undertaking to do all that is reasonable to ensure health and safety not only of their employees.’ but of other persons who may be associated with the business.

‘It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of all his employees.’ As regards any duty or requirement imposed on his employer or any other person by or under any of the relevant statutory provisions, to co-operate with him so far as is necessary to enable that duty or requirement to be performed or complied with.

The Health and Safety Executive Inspectors do randomly visit business premises, checking that all items and the premises comply with the current Health & Safety regulations, the penalty for failure to meet the required standards may be a fine of up to £20,000 for each offence or even imprisonment depending on case circumstances.
